DO YOU KNOW THE BCC?

The "Born Centre Cultural" from outside
The “Born Centre Cultural” is an exceptional and unique building that binds with three centuries of our history, which has helped historians to investigate how life was at that time.

A long time ago, the “Born” was a market where people bought food. Before turning becoming it into a museum, they were going to build a library, until they noticed some ruins.
Back in the 13th century, when Felip V (successor to Carles II) won the war of succession, in which the city of Barcelona suffered a siege back in the 1714, he built the “Cuitadella” a military fortress, made to prevent the Catalans from revolting. The military fortress was built on top of houses and buildings of one part of the city. “El Born Cultural Centre” under a symbolic structure of iron architecture from the nineteenth century is situated on one of the parts of the city that was demolished.

The site:
This site, which has 8.000 m2 and in a perfect state of conservation, makes this museum unique in Europe and in the world.
The "Born Centre Cultural" from the inside
The site corresponds to the Born part of the area of the former “Vilanova de Mar”. It is a part of the rich urban spaces with remarkable places like the”Pont de la Carniceria”, the Plaça del Mercat, and part of the “Rec Comtal de Barcelona” and several sections of streets, such as the “Corders de Viola”, the “Xucles”, the “Joc de la Pilota”, or the “Ventre” or “Bonaire”, which still has he same name, which was three centuries ago a street of sailor’s houses.
Archaeological work also led some three hundred bombs (located in the siege), Triquet game tiles and thousands of everyday objects, most of which can be seen in the permanent exhibitions.

The exhibitions:
  • “Barcelona 1700. De les pedres a les persones”: It is a permanent exhibition. It recalls the society of Barcelona during the eighteenth century
  • Fins a aconseguir-ho! El setge de 1714”: It is a temporary exhibition.  This presents the Catalan War (1713-1714), which was the epilogue of the War of the Spanish Succession, which recreates the final battle on September 11
